A place for insects to stay: insect motels

By the Haldimand Horticultural Society

Haldimand Horticultural Society (HHS) members are attempting to attract beneficial insects to the gardens, like bees, ladybugs, beetles, wasps, butterflies, and more that are declining due to the past use of pesticides, pollution, habitat loss, weather, and climate change. Insects provide a food source for birds as well as pollination of the plants that surround us. Our local crops and gardens rely on pollinators.

HHS wants to preserve our Haldimand landscape for future generations by adding native plants that are adaptable to our climate, require less watering and maintenance, and provide habitats for overwintering of insects. Private home gardens are an essential part of conserving for the future, providing food and shelter for wildlife.

Ways you can help to attract pollinators

  • Fall is not too late to purchase perennials that will attract the pollinator insects to your gardens and the local garden centres have sales on pollinator-friendly plants.
  • Resist the desire to clean up the old branches, tall grasses, and plant material on your property.
  • Add low-maintenance plants that attract butterflies.
  • Build insect motels.
