CAYUGA—Cayuga resident Cindy Raymer is grateful to those in the community who answered her call for help after her newly rescued dog, a terrier mix named Faith, wrestled free from her harness and took off running.

Faith is one of two dogs adopted at the same time by Raymer recently from Guelph-based rescue Safe Paws Animal Rescue of Ontario. Faith’s new sibling is named, rather appropriately, Hope.
Raymer said that Faith escaped from her harness while tethered to a lead line in the yard. She remarked, “I have come to learn that a harness is not good to use for rescue dogs that are so scared of everything. They want to flee because they are so scared.”
With Faith missing, Raymer put the call out on social media, asking for help. In addition to the rep from Safe Paws, and members of Faith’s former foster family in Ajax, Raymer claims that “total strangers” arrived on her doorstep offering to help: “One lady came out to give me support, a hug or two, and pray with me. I have no idea who she was.”
She said that the makeshift team of resourceful volunteers worked together to comb a nearby field, finding fresh paw prints in some rain-softened mud. While conducting the search, an Amazon delivery driver arrived at Raymer’s home with a package. Faith suddenly reappeared, prompting the driver to call out to Raymer and let her know.
“I saw her, called the ladies out looking for her, they came running from everywhere. She took off again. The ladies got to the end of my driveway as Faith was running to a car coming down the road. That car stopped and picked her up and the ladies immediately told them they were out searching for her,” recalled Raymer.
Relieved, Raymer invited her helpers into her room to cool down and enjoy a drink. While heading in, yet another anonymous stranger pulled up out front in their truck to help. She concluded, “I am so grateful to everyone that came out to help me. I’ve never been so proud to live in Cayuga.”
