A Taste of Haldimand – June 26, 2025

It’s summer time! I love this time of year when the flowers are blooming and we start to see the local produce appearing at the market stands. We are fortunate to live in an area of Canada that provides so many local fruits and vegetables.

Asparagus is one of those vegetables I really enjoy. Browsing through the cookbook “The Ontario Table,” I discovered the asparagus grilled cheese. This book was written by Lynn Ogryzlo and I received it as a gift about 10 years ago.

The author travelled throughout Ontario, searching for local farmers and producers, wanting to promote what they produced and where.  Her message to consumers is to buy local and cook in season. The recipes are accompanied by beautiful photographs and details of the farming region. The asparagus grilled cheese recipe takes the traditional sandwich up a notch. I made this sandwich and thoroughly enjoyed it for my breakfast.

Another summer food is ice cream. It’s always fun to make your own sundaes at home, with the grandchildren or as a dessert following an outdoor meal. I don’t recall the origin of these recipes but they are “the best tasting” toppings I have ever eaten. This sentiment has also been expressed a few times by those I have served it to. These are decadent and intended for the occasional indulgence. In my mind, if I am going to splurge, I want good quality ingredients as I will relish every mouthful. Enjoy!
