A Taste of Haldimand – October 23, 2025

Peaceful. Calm. Beautiful. These were the words I was pondering as I strolled the grounds of the Purple Haven Lavender Farm near Canfield on a warm, sunny afternoon. Owner Kim Drew was on hand and happily engaged in interesting conversation about her flowers and all the other activities on the farm.

Kim and her husband Brian bought the 37-acre farm about 12 years ago. At the time they were residing in Burlington and her husband had always dreamed of moving to a farm. Their children had moved out and were starting their own lives, so now was the time!

As a child growing up, Kim’s parents always kept a garden, growing as much of their own food as they could. She continued that tradition when she had her own family, adding lavender and herbs. As she contemplated moving to the country, it seemed natural to once again create that garden, but this time there was room for so many more possibilities. Lavender is the primary planting, but she has also added various wildflowers and large vegetable beds.

Kim creates all the lavender-based products sold in the onsite store. She has a wide variety of offerings from preserves and condiments, soaps, personal care products, and candles. The culinary lavender caught my eye and Kim explained that lavender can be easily substituted for rosemary in recipes. You can also add some to your favourite sugar cookie recipe for a hint of lavender. Common English lavender found in most gardens is well suited for adding to your favourite recipes.  Here are a couple of interesting recipes featuring lavender. Enjoy!
