HAGERSVILLE—2023 marks the 150th anniversary of Springvale United Church.
More than 175 years ago, two pioneer men, by the name of Benn and Hicks, claim the credit of being the first white settlers to settle on the 14th Concession. They came from Cambden near Kingston, and saw great possibilites in this area. They erected cabins and returned home to make plans to return the following year with their families and possessions. After missing their religion, they began open-air services in the school yard under the trees. Around 1850, a school house was built and a place of worship was also provided, with instruction given by W. Tomblin, a Wesleyan-Methodist Minister and teacher.
The first church was opened under the guidance of Samuel Bowmen. A frame building was purchased from the property of Edward Gowan Sr. on the 13th Concession, owned by the Royal Templars, and relocated to the corner of Lot 7 Concession 13. This was completely remodeled and opened as a Wesleyan-Methodist Church.
The increase in population meant that a larger building was needed. In 1873, a parcel of land was donated by Mr. John Holbrook, the present location of our church. The church was to be 36 feet by 48 feet. This new building was to be made of bricks three deep. The pews, made of red oak, were donated by the Watson family.
John Holbrook built his stone house in about 1869 (situated west of the church, and still lived in today). In keeping with the Methodist custom, two rooms on the top floor were set aside for the minister, with the result that for the next 20 years the Assistant Minister made his home there.
We do not know the hardships endured or the long hours spent in erecting the building, but those men built well as signified by our present day church, which was dedicated, free of debt, by the Rev. Byers in 1874.
Over the years many events, dedications, and additions have taken place to the church. On June 10, 1925, the Congregational Church, the Presbyterian Church of Canada, and the Canadian Methodist Church united their history and traditions, thus the United Church of Canada was formed. Springvale Wesleyan Methodist church became Springvale United Church.
Our history is rich and there is so much more to share. In the months ahead we are planning special events to celebrate our rich history within Springvale and the community. A historical memorial book is being put together that will honour all those who have made and continue to make Springvale United Church a part of the ministry of Jesus Christ.
We would like to invite you to an Anniversary Concert on Sunday, May 7 at 2:30 p.m., 2647 Haldimand County Road 55, Hagersville. The concert is presented by the Lynn Valley Voices of Norfolk County. The choir director is a descendent of one of the first families to worship in this church. The choir will feature a mixture of favourites that they have performed since their founding in 2015. Admission is by donation.
