Dunnville Horticultural Society update

By Jennifer Miller

DUNNVILLE—Well, another year has come and gone in which Dunnville Horticultural Society put together a lot of amazing programs and projects. Here is some of what is in store for 2024!

In February, Linda Crago from Tree and Twig Heirloom Vegetable Farm will be speaking about growing heirloom vegetables.

We are also excited to welcome back Melissa North to speak this spring about native plants. Other informative speakers are being lined up for the monthly meetings.

Kindergarten students from St. Michael’s School in Dunnville will once again be venturing each week this spring to explore Thompson Creek ECO Park. Through snow, rain, or shine, these students will learn about the plants and animals found in this unique park located on Robinson Road with DHS volunteers alongside them.

May turned out to be a whirlwind of a month last year and this year will be no different.

Our annual plant sale will be happening on Saturday, May 11, 2024. This spectacular event is a success year after year because of the support of our members. We look forward to lots of plants ending up in new gardens.

The backbone of our society is the planting, weeding, and maintenance of numerous flower beds around the town. A number of enhancements are planned for highly visible beds and will be completed ahead of planting annuals.

Planting days will take place over three days after the Victoria Day weekend. What a fantastic job our volunteers continue to do year after year!

Junior Member Alicia Stavinga was awarded a scholarship last autumn to assist with the cost of studies at Loyalist College in Belleville.

Dunnville Horticultural Society is ready to award scholarships to two local students who plan to study horticulture, agriculture, or other related program of study.

Come out on the third Thursday of the month for an entertaining night (no meetings in July, August, and December) at Dunnville Optimist Hall on Main Street East. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting starts at 7 p.m.

You will enjoy light refreshments, informative speakers, and a friendly atmosphere. Dunnville Horticultural Society asks you to ‘Lug a Mug’ to meetings to help reduce our environmental footprint.

You never know what interesting item may be found on the ‘Ways and Means’ table. Annual memberships may be purchased for $10 per person, $15 per couple, or $5 for junior membership.

Hope to see you at the next meeting on January 18, 2024 in which gardening trends and tips will be shared from YouTube videos.

Dunnville Horticultural Society continues to be a vibrant and valuable part of the Dunn-ville community.
