It’s April and spring has sprung. Birds are singing, sun is shining, everyone is getting out to stretch from the winter cold. AHH! It’s time to get out in the garden, and that’s just what Dunnville Horticultural Society (DHS) has planned. Here are some of the events we have planned.

Seedy Saturday will take place on April 29, 2023. DHS and Haldimand Horticultural Society are combining their Seedy Saturday events this year to create a large green event at the Cayuga Memorial Arena. This is the place to be, with over 30-plus vendors, intriguing speakers, prizes, and much more. There will be fun for the entire family. Children 12 and under are free and general admission is only $5. Open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., there is plenty of time to enjoy the event of the season.

This month, DHS is excited to announce a collaboration project with St. Michael’s School being held every Tuesday from April to June. This educational program will take place at Thompson Creek with amazing kindergarten children. They are the next generation of horticultural society members and it is such a joy seeing them outside learning, exploring, and playing.

The famous DHS Plant Sale is in mid-May. Come grab your perennials to help fill your garden. Add colour, unique foliage, and fill in those empty spaces. All proceeds help DHS with upcoming projects.

After the Plant Sale are Planting Days on May 23, 24, and 25. We can’t wait to add a pop of colour to our awesome town. Do you love flowers and colour? Why not come out and join us. Volunteer your time and help beautify Dunnville. Contact DHS to join.

Do you like to knit or crochet? Well, we need your help. DHS is partnering with the Dunnville Legion to make poppies for this year’s Remembrance Day event. We will be hosting a Poppy Party at the Legion and will be providing all the materials required. Even if you aren’t great at crocheting or knitting, come out anyways and learn, while helping to remember our veterans. Contact DHS for details and registration.

Don’t forget about the Monthly Program Night. Every third Thursday of the month from 7 to 9 p.m. DHS holds a lovely evening of information and refreshments. This month’s speaker is Melissa North from Growing Things. She will be speaking about edible plants – a topic not to be missed. Held at the Optimist Hall, we are inclusive and fully accessible. Memberships will be available and there will be a ways and means table. Please also remember to Lug a Mug to help do our part for the environment. Also, this month, bring a friend, family member, grandkid, or anyone else you know and get a ballot for one of many prizes. If your attendee purchases a membership you also receive an extra ballot, win-win for all. We can’t wait to meet all the new faces.
