Erin Elliot-Mehlenbacher on 20 years of business and supporting the community

CAYUGA—For Erin Elliot-Mehlenbacher, owner-operator of Haldimand Hands on Health (HHOH), the past 20 years have been spent doing what she loves best: providing a valuable service to the community and working to make that community a better place for all.

Offering massage therapy services, HHOH first opened their doors in 2003. Since then, Mehlenbacher has remained the sole proprietor of the business, which grew from its initial 500 sq. ft. location to its current 2,500 sq. ft. location at 5 Talbot St. W.

Mehlenbacher looked back on her journey so far: “Over these past two decades, I’ve faced numerous challenges and overcome remarkable life experiences. I’ve become a mother of three children, persevered through a stroke, endured the flooding of my newly renovated building just two years after completion (leading to a six-week shutdown), and navigated the recent hardships posed by the pandemic.”

She added, “Sharing these experiences allows me to offer insights into the resilience and adaptability required to thrive as an entrepreneur.”

Mehlenbacher reflected on how those challenges have underscored her determination to succeed, adding, “These experiences have significantly influenced my approach to risk management, contingency planning, and the vital role of community support.”

As a female entrepreneur, Mehlenbacher is proud of the example she’s set for others and is more than willing to share some insight into breaking barriers in the workplace. She added, “I’m passionate about offering advice to aspiring female entrepreneurs on how to navigate these challenges and achieve their goals.”

She is excited to see the next generation of business leaders spring up in the Cayuga area over the next 20 years, pledging to be there for any who need a bit of help learning how to “persevere, cultivate resilience, and chase their entrepreneurial dreams. Young entrepreneurs can undoubtedly benefit from learning how I’ve surmounted adversity to attain success.”

Mehlenbacher understands the responsibility to give back to the community supporting her business, something she is more than game for, offering sponsorship support to many worthy local causes.

“I’ve sponsored teams, provided financial assistance for equipment and travel, and even offered my facility for team events and fundraisers. Through these efforts, I’ve witnessed firsthand the joy and camaraderie that participating in sports brings to young athletes,” she explained. “It’s not just about playing a game; it’s about fostering discipline, teamwork, and a sense of belonging. By supporting local sports, I’ve contributed to the physical and emotional wellbeing of our youth while promoting a healthy and active lifestyle.”

Her work with local churches and schools over the years has focused on wellness initiatives, including complementary workshops on stress relief, self-care, and overall wellbeing.

She described her views on philanthropism, “It’s not just about financial support, although that’s important. It’s also about being actively engaged and understanding the unique needs of the community. Whether it’s through mentorship programs, participating in local events, or supporting educational initiatives, businesses have a role to play in shaping the social fabric of their communities.… It’s about being a proactive and supportive presence in Cayuga, contributing to the wellbeing of its residents, and promoting a sense of togetherness that makes our community stronger and more resilient.”

Beyond the chance to introduce new services and promote upcoming community initiatives, Mehlenbacher is excited about the potential of crossing another landmark off the list: handing down her business to the next generation.

“I am hopeful that my children may be interested in joining my business to carry it on, allowing me to venture on to some new achievements. Sharing my vision for the future generates anticipation and excitement, both for me and those who have been part of this incredible journey,” she shared.

In celebration of her milestone, Mehlenbacher will be hosting a week-long celebration at HHOH from November 27 to December 1 and culminating in an open house on the 1st: “This event will offer delightful appetizers, desserts, and complimentary mini-treatments for attendees.”

She concluded, “I believe that my journey can inspire others, particularly young entrepreneurs and aspiring business owners. It showcases the resilience and determination required to thrive in the face of adversity and unexpected challenges.”
