LOWBANKS—In 1832 Thomas Etherington (originally Hetherington) and his second wife, Lady Harrison, along with their two children, Abbie and George, immigrated from England to Canada, eventually settling into the Niagara area. In the succeeding years, seven more children were born: Robert, Christopher, Joseph, Annie, Henry, Harry, and Mary.
In 1920, they held their first family reunion at a family farm in the area. Every year since then on the closest Sunday to August 25, which was Thomas’ birthday, they have held the reunion. The locations have changed over the years but have remained in the Niagara area. For many years it was held in Welland, then a number of years in Dunnville. In more recent times it has been located in Port Colborne.
