DUNNVILLE—On Tuesday, March 14, 2023, International PI Day, Grace United Church hosted a community event playing on the day with their version called PIE (Public, Intentional, and Explicit) Day. Reverend Warner Bloomfield said, ”The United Church of Canada has been encouraging congregations to be explicitly welcoming and inviting in the public for people from all walks of life, but being very explicit about the fact that we are inviting people of the LGBTQ2S+ community who so often feel that they are excluded or in many cases persecuted. So, we want to be very public and intentional in saying no, we welcome you, and we want to do a better job of being welcoming and inviting and removing the barriers that we may not even be aware of that exist.” Members of the community were invited to come out to “eat, laugh, and talk around a table” and, based on the turnout of approximately 40 people from ages 4 to 94, Bloomfield added, “This has been great, I’ve been thrilled with the turnout so we will likely do this again.” Shown above is Bloomfield with Sonya McKeen and Makayla (6) of Dunnville enjoying some pie. —Haldimand Press photo by Valerie Posthumus.
