To kick off the day, the opening ceremonies featured a procession led by RCL Branch 164 Piper Jim Yates and his student Aubrey Sholer, followed by a proclamation from Town Crier Larry Davis and a Land Declaration by Hayley Mattice. Mayor Shelley Ann Bentley and Brad Adams, representing MPP Bobbi Ann Brady, offered congratulations from Haldimand County and the Province of Ontario respectively.

Hagersville Chamber of Commerce President Rob Phillips thanked the Hagersville 150 Committee, the Lions Club, Haldimand County, event sponsors, and Canadian Heritage for their support. He also acknowledged the work of the local families who contributed to the town’s development, including the Hagersville Clock Tower project led by John Luttjehuizen.

When the capsule was opened, most of the contents—newspapers, photos, and writings—were damaged by water over the past 25 years. Despite this, the ceremony was a symbolic moment for the town, reminding everyone of Hagersville’s strong community spirit.

After the unveiling, the festivities continued in the Almas Room at the Hagersville Arena, where residents enjoyed refreshments, a special art exhibit by local artist Karen Zandersons, and a free public skate. Hagersville Foodland’s 150th-themed cupcake cake and Timbits and hot drinks from Tim Hortons (donated by Salverda Enterprises) kept everyone warm despite the cold weather.

Special guest Jim Midgley, former hockey player and coach, joined the public skate, interacting with participants and adding to the excitement of the day.

“The opening of the time capsule marks just the beginning,” said Hagersville 150 co-chair Nancy Snyder. “We’ve come a long way in 150 years, and we’re looking forward to the celebrations ahead.”

Co-chair Lisa Mattice echoed her excitement, noting the year-long events will highlight what makes Hagersville unique.

Those leaving the event left filled with a sense of pride and anticipation for the year ahead.
