HALDIMAND—Bill Mitchell, a yard supervisor with Haldimand’s Roads Operations, was celebrated on the eve of his retirement as Mayor Shelley Ann Bentley gave a speech at a Council meeting last Wednesday in recognition of his 32 years of dedicated service to Haldimand County.

Mitchell started his career with the region back in 1990, in the days before Haldimand and Norfolk split into two separate counties.

He worked as a foreman until 2017 when, due to his “vast experience and knowledge,” he was promoted to Supervisor of Roads Operations and has efficiently supervised staff at the Walpole Operations Yard ever since.

“Over the years, Bill found his passion for municipal life, specifically winter operations. If you couldn’t find Bill, it was because he was out making sure the roads were safe for the residents and visitors of Haldimand,” said Bentley during her speech.

In addition to his County position, Mitchell found ways to serve his community even in his downtime, volunteering with the Haldimand County Fire Department from 2001- 2016, eventually reaching the status of Captain with the department, and “serving his community with pride,” according to Bentley.

Mitchell was also actively involved in the Haldimand Norfolk Public Works Association as a member for many years, where he served on the executive and was always willing to pitch in when it came time to set up the truck rodeos or participate as a judge and co-ordinator.

A long-time resident of Selkirk, Mitchell’s hobbies include “hunting with his pals, riding his motorcycle or quad, and enjoying the odd sip of scotch.”

Bentley concluded her speech, “As Bill moves into his retirement, we hope he takes the time to take that trip to Scotland, not just to enjoy some of their finest spirits, but also to see some of your family. Best wishes on your retirement Bill, and thanks again for 32 years of service.”

Mitchell thanked those in attendance for their applause and kept his comments short and sweet.

“I don’t have a whole lot to say, but I will say it’s been a great place to work over the years. Back in the amalgamation I had a checkmark for either Norfolk or Haldimand – I’m delighted I picked Haldimand. It’s been a great place to work, good people to work with…. Thanks again.”
