Honouring Barb Martindale

To the Editor,

It is wonderful that Haldimand County is honouring the late Barbara Martindale by naming the path leading from Caithness Street to the Edinburgh Square Heritage & Cultural Centre as “Barbara Martindale Memorial Lane”.

One would also hope that, before erecting the storyboard detailing Barbara’s life and many civic contributions, the lane itself is first rehabilitated and beautified. As can be clearly seen in the photo published April 20 in The Haldimand Press, at the present time the lane is made of faded, patched, and cracked asphalt with weeds growing between the cracks. That is no way to honour anyone, let alone an eminent person such as Barbara Martindale.

Too often we are accepting of public spaces that do no one credit. Civic pride demands we do better and now all the more so with respect to this lane, which will soon bear the name of such a widely respected local person.

Yours truly,

Greg Crone,

Caledonia
