Letter to the Editor: It’s time for meaningful progress at the Nanticoke Industrial Park

To the Editor,

With the Ontario Government Bill 5 Protect Ontario by Unleashing Our Economy Act 2025, the Nanticoke Industrial Park could get the attention toward industrial expansion that it so rightfully deserves.

The Nanticoke Industrial Park has been plagued by inadequate infrastructure, poor provincial representation, and unachievable environmental screening standards for would-be industrial projects.

Examples of failed industrial opportunities include an automotive glass manufacturer, an organic fertilizer manufacturer, and a proposed grain terminal facility. These three missed opportunities could have been achievable with provincial representation, infrastructure investment, and a revision of municipal bylaws and zoning.

The introduction of the Act would allow the minister to waive environmental impact assessments including hydrological, archaeological, bylaws of municipal bodies, and designated boards.

We must also mention the catalyst of the strong mayor’s powers with its primary focus to override municipal control and adhere to the Provincial Planning Act with respect to housing.

This bold move will no doubt grab the attention of developers, who want to promote their housing projects, which have been planned north of the industrial park and throughout Haldimand.

The strong mayor’s powers also provide an avenue for residential infilling and secondary suites for homeowners wanting to maximize their properties.
