Dear Members of Haldimand County Council,

I am writing to express serious concerns regarding the recent implementation of strong mayor powers in Haldimand County. As a resident who values fair representation, I am deeply troubled by both the process and the long-term implications of this decision.
In 2023, this Council unanimously voted against the adoption of strong mayor powers – a clear, united stance made in the interest of protecting democratic governance. At that time, Mayor Bentley herself rejected the use of these powers. It is therefore deeply concerning that these powers have now been accepted without any formal consultation, deliberation, or vote from the current Council. This quiet and unilateral shift impacts not only our present decision-making, but sets a precedent for the future.
Strong mayor powers allow for decisions to be made without full Council input, diminishing the voices of ward councillors who represent diverse communities across our county. This risks creating an imbalance of power, reducing transparency, and enabling development or policy decisions to be pushed through without public debate.
It also has consequences for County staff, many of whom may now feel uncertainty in their roles or fear reprisal in a top-down decision-making environment.
This issue is not about one individual – it is about the long-term governance of Haldimand County. We must ask ourselves: what precedent are we setting for future councils and mayors, and will it strengthen or weaken the voice of our constituents?
I respectfully request that Council formally deliberate on the adoption and use of strong mayor powers, and bring this matter to a public vote. Residents deserve clarity, transparency, and the assurance that major decisions affecting our democratic structure are made with full accountability.
Thank you for your continued service and dedication to representing the people of Haldimand.
Sincerely,
Marianne Kidd
Ward 5 Resident
