Letters to the editor

Terry Fox Run returning to Caledonia

To the Editors,

This letter is my personal invite to you to participate at the Terry Fox Run on September 17, 2023 at the beautiful LaFortune Park on Hwy. 54 in Caledonia. We are hopeful for sunny skies to match the sunny faces we love to see each year and look forward to meeting new friends and neighbours to our community. For many of us, the Terry Fox event is a “family affair”. We love the dedication from the people who have participated faithfully for many years as well as the enthusiasm from anyone who participates for the first time.

We will encourage as many people as possible to park at the Lower La Fortune Park parking lot located directly at 2365 Haldimand County Hwy. 54. This location will be where the registration will take place. Registration will be open at 9 a.m. and the walk/run event will start at 10 a.m. The route will be 1km and 5km, with the option to do it again to make 10km for those who wish to do so. We are hopeful for good weather so everyone may enjoy their time at this “hidden treasure” in our own backyard of the county!

Last year, I was fortunate enough to have many people step up and assist my daughter Lynaya in running the Terry Fox event. Thanks once again to everyone for patience and grace for allowing the event to run smoothly. This year, the event will have some new faces in the background as volunteers. If you know of students looking for volunteer hours for school or anyone else who would like to lend a hand, you can reach me by email at brinkes@yahoo.com or by cell phone at 905-929-6837.

I know many of you are starting to receive emails about registering for the event. Follow the link for our event if you would like to sign up now at run.terryfox.ca/caledonia. Alternatively, we will have happy, cheerful people to sign you up the day of the event as always.

The Terry Fox Run has been a part of our community for the last 30-plus years. Last year, the return to in-person Terry Fox Runs was a success with Ontario raising $12.5 million for cancer research through community and school programs. At some point in our life, cancer will have touched a friend or family member or even ourselves. As a young man, Terry had an incredibly selfless vision to raise $1 per person by running across the country. In his wildest dreams, I don’t think he could ever fathom that his family and fellow Canadians could take that dream and turn it into the annual event where they carry his relay torch.

Thank you for being a part of this day over the years and making it a joy for me to serve the community in this capacity. It is my hope to provide you with a good venue with community and fellowship to support such an amazing cause.

On2Ottawa Protest

To the Editors,

It seems Mr. Suedfeld and the “On2Ottawa” protest group could use a suggestion regarding successfully fighting the wildfires raging throughout our province. Having ample time on hand to attack a painting hanging in a gallery with paint suggests both his, and the group’s, time could be of more significance if they applied their time and energy as volunteer firefighters. Actively contributing obviously isn’t one of their priorities.

Being charged with mischief suggests an appropriate charge either isn’t on the books, or someone was derelict in applying the proper charge.
