OPP Board gives $1,300 to HN Crime Stoppers

CAYUGA—With just five board members and over 450 reports last year, Crime Stoppers of Haldimand & Norfolk is doing more with less – and hoping for a little more help.

The non-profit, volunteer-led organization appeared before the Haldimand County OPP Board on May 22, 2025 to deliver its annual update and submit a funding request to help sustain its crime-fighting mission in 2025.

“Thank you board members for allowing us to speak to you today and give us the opportunity to tell you a little bit about our program,” said Ken Schaus, Crime Stoppers Board Director. “We’ve been doing this for 37 years now.”

Crime Stoppers of Haldimand & Norfolk operates as a registered charity, combining the efforts of police, media, and the community to encourage anonymous crime reporting.

In 2024, the organization received 457 tips, which led to 33 arrests, 174 charges laid, and the recovery of over $320,000 worth of narcotics.

In recognition of the role the public plays in these outcomes, Crime Stoppers awarded $7,900 in tip rewards last year.

Schaus said this work is being done by a small but committed group of volunteers.

“We only have five members, and we’d like to have some more,” he said, adding that a recruitment campaign has been underway. “Hopefully by the end of the year we’ll be back up to a reasonable number.”

Maintaining operations requires more than just volunteers.

Funding remains an annual challenge for the organization, which receives no base government funding and instead relies on grassroots events, sponsorships, and donations. Schaus cited the group’s golf tournament, barbecues, raffles, and shredding services as examples of local fundraising efforts.

These events, he explained, are also opportunities to raise awareness and encourage public engagement.

In a formal letter submitted to the board, D’Armiento requested that the board consider providing a $5,000 donation to help keep the program “thriving.”

“Our volunteer board of directors ensures that we are present throughout the year at local craft shows, fairs, parades and much more,” the letter stated. “These events are a key source of opportunities for spreading awareness. We will continue to support and participate all around Haldimand & Norfolk communities.”

The board voted to donate $1,300.
