HALDIMAND—The Haldimand Norfolk Brant Shoebox Project for Women has just launched their annual holiday gift-filled shoebox drive supporting local at-risk women.
What is The Haldimand Norfolk Brant Shoebox Project?
We collect and distribute gift-filled shoeboxes (valued at $50) to at-risk women within Haldimand, Norfolk, and Brant counties during the holidays in order to enhance self-esteem and reduce feelings of isolation. This is the fifth year for this project locally.
What goes in a shoebox?
Shoeboxes are meant to make a woman feel special during hard times happening during the holidays. Each shoebox is valued at $50 and includes: something special (gift card, jewellery), something practical (hair ties, hair brush), something fun (playing cards, journal), something sweet (candy, nut-free chocolate), something personal (shampoo, body wash), something pretty (nail polish, mascara), something soothing (lotion, sleep mask), and something cozy (socks, mittens/gloves). And the best part? Each shoebox includes a handwritten note with words of encouragement that help to make shoebox recipients feel recognized and special. There are also some items that they ask donors to not include in their shoebox donation, for various reasons, such as: used goods, anything containing alcohol, razors, and personal hygiene products – if they do receive any of these items, they will find a shelter or community organization that will benefit from items of this nature.
