CANFIELD—Our last two Haldimand 4-H Potato Club meetings were held at the Canfield Community Centre, which still doesn’t have a dishwasher. I’ve been thinking about it though and wondering who would unload the dishwasher; I could go back the next morning and unload it, as I unload my dishwasher every morning (without being asked).

In meeting #2, we started the meeting by having the Vice President, my brother Brandon, open the meeting by stating our 4-H pledge. We talked about what potato items we had eaten since the previous meeting. We then talked about kitchen safety and dishwashing protocol.

After this, we broke into three groups and made Big Mac-inspired poutine and mashed potato cookies in one group. The second group made waffle fries poutine and crunchy potato balls. The third group made tater tot poutine and potato crust quiche. I really liked the waffle fries and the tater tot poutine. We ended with more kitchen cleaning.
In the third meeting, our President, Walker Hedley, opened the meeting by stating our 4-H pledge. We got right into our cooking, breaking into groups and making mashed potato baked donuts, loaded baked potato bread, sweet potato muffins, mashed potato puffs, and grated potato pizza crust.
The potato donuts and sweet potato muffins were our absolute favourite. I went into the parking lot and gave a donut to my dad right away because I knew he had to try it. I need to get my mom a donut pan so we can make those yummy donuts, but I decided not to do that for Mother’s Day because my dad has always said you don’t buy kitchen appliances, tools etc., unless they were asked for – otherwise you’re telling the person you bought it for that they’re the ones who are supposed to use it.
I’ve always refused to eat anything that had a sweet potato in it, but I really loved the muffins. My mom keeps saying she’s impressed this group is getting me to eat things I don’t usually want to.
We ended the night with more kitchen clean up and I spent the entire drive home telling my parents about how much fun I’m having in this group. I can’t wait to see what we make next.
