HAGERSVILLE—Eighteen-year-old Ethan Smith has grown up playing both fastball and hardball but, as the only Midget age (U19) player remaining from the Haldimand A’s at the end of the 2018 season, he wasn’t sure where he would play the coming year.

The answer to that question came when Smith, who lives in Hagersville, was invited to play in Shallow Lake, which is also part of the Ontario Amateur Softball Association (OASA). Smith was with the team playing centre field for four tournaments, winning in Kitchener, placing forth at OASA Eliminations, and placing second at OASA Provincials. The final tournament was the U19 Canadian Championships in Owen Sound where Shallow Lake captured gold.

Through the round robin portion of the tournament the team played well, and Smith says, “We knew finishing top four would be important.” Shallow Lake opened the medal round with a loss to Belmore, making the road to the finals more challenging.

They then had a win over Newfoundland followed by a win over Kitchener-Waterloo.
