CAYUGA—Athletiques International was named as the first of five clubs to be the recipient of a training module from the Ontario governing body for track and field called Keeping Girls in Sport (KGIS).
This might not be surprising to those familiar with the club, which runs out of Cayuga, seeing as more than 80% of its annual membership is comprised of girls. It also has a long history of developing athletes that seem unimportant at the start but go on to win major titles before they are done. Kelly Bell became an OFSAA hurdle medalist, Coralen Velsen became an OFSAA cross-country champion, and Valerie Tulloch became the first Canadian woman to throw the javelin over 60 metres, with each of them being ignored as possibilities until connecting with Athletiques.
