To the Editors,
In a Toronto Star article on October 23, 2020, Haldimand Mayor Ken Hewitt admitted to their reporter that he had made a down payment for his child on a house in the contested Caledonia housing project. This was subsequently pointed out in The Haldimand Press on October 29.
The Haldimand County Code of Ethics, 2001-19, states, among others, “Employees shall not: engage in any outside work or activity in business undertaking in a professional capacity that will or might appear to influence or affect the carrying out of duties as a Haldimand County employee.” Nor are they to “place themselves in a position where they could receive any direct or indirect benefit or interest from any contracts about which the employee can influence decisions.”
