HAGERSVILLE—Last Thursday, June 2, 2022 the Haldimand Abilities Centre (HAC) in Hagersville hosted their first in-person event since the pandemic forced them to take most of their programming online for the last couple of years.

“HAC’s Welcome Back BBQ was quite a significant event,” said Lakeisha Thelwell, Social Recreation and Public Relations Coordinator for HAC.

“During the hiatus of the pandemic, many of our programs were completely online. The HAC staff witnessed the change in socialization and mental health challenges amongst our participants,” continued Thelwell. “This barbecue allowed our participants to reconnect with each other in person and to be reintroduced to the social programs that they love and enjoy. It was amazing to have so many people come out to support us.”

It was clear that the participants in the barbecue were very pleased to be back amongst their peers, with Thelwell noting that HAC received praise for their safety protocols, the presentation of the event, and the food.

The barbecue was only the beginning, with much more on the horizon for HAC as summer rolls in.

“This summer we will be program packed. We will have outdoor programs, another social event with food, and more. Stay tuned for the July calendar and don’t forget to follow our Haldimand Abilities Centre Facebook page,” said Thelwell.

HAC is a community partnership established in Haldimand County, between Alzheimer’s Society BHNHH, Head Injury Rehabilitation Ontario, and Vision Loss Rehabilitation Ontario.

“The Haldimand Abilities Centre offers an environment for social connections, learning skills, maintaining physical health, emotional support, and beyond. Programs are provided in-person as well as virtual to meet each person’s needs. All programs are free of charge and accessible to everyone in the community,” summed up Thelwell.
