To the Editors,
The world is in the midst of a global food crisis, Ontario is losing 319 acres of farmland a day, a steep climb from the 175 acres of daily average loss that was recorded in the 1996-2016 census of Agriculture.
It has become more critical than ever to change course from development to preserving farmland. We can’t afford to import everything if it is even possible. 823 million people were going hungry in 2021 according to the UN.
The federally proposed 30% nitrogen fertilizer cut will cut wheat and corn production by 30% or more, making land even more necessary to preserve. The fertilizer cut will likely grow steeper as the government pushes their net zero agenda.
The 4,200 acres at Nanticoke that Empire Homes wants to develop is productive and profitable. This needs to be stopped to protect our much-needed farmland in Haldimand.
Farmland that is turned into pavement can never produce food again.
