Letter to the editor: Conservative leadership race

To the Editors,

Following the recent election for the leadership of the Conservative Party of Canada, local MPP Leslyn Lewis, who took part in that race, issued a prepared statement.

Part of that statement, however, is confusing: concerning the support she received, she stated, “It has far exceeded expectations and surpassed the support I received in 2020.”

In 2020, the initial leadership race in which she participated, she finished third with 30% of the votes, coming from 52,000 votes out of 174,000 cast. This time around, again finishing third, out of the 450,000 votes cast, she received 43,000. In other words, although there were an additional 275,000 votes cast, she received 9,000 fewer, giving her the support of less than 10% of the members.

She obviously didn’t earn her PhD with anything resembling mathematics.

Or perhaps this is just a reflection of our current educational system.
