CALEDONIA—A mini flower and vegetable competition was held at the September General Meeting of Haldimand Horticultural Society (HHS) at St. Paul’s Anglican Church.
All entries are judged using Ontario Judging and Exhibiting Standards. Three classes were available to enter: 1) Vegetable Class, 2) Dahlia Class, and 3) Potted Plants. The three Best in Show winners were: Best Vegetable Don Reeder, Best Dahlia Don Reeder, and Best Potted Plant Elsie Eubank.
Other participants showing their winning entries were Sharon Slack, Barb Matten, June Cayuga, Deborah Keddy, and Kim Chandler. This was the first year in the many years of holding this show that so many beautiful dahlias were entered.
Thank you to all who entered their produce and flowers.
Guest Speaker Rosiland Rumball concluded the evening with her topic of “Landscape – the Good, the Bad & the Ugly.” Members enjoyed an armchair tour of the southwest – Route 66 through Texas and New Mexico and the Boyce Thompson Arboretum on the Sonora Desert in Arizona. Other features of her talk showed us the landscaping at the Monte Vista Resort, as well as a tour from the Las Vegas desert to the mountains in Provo, Utah and the California Trail in Wyoming. Who knew there were so many different kinds of cacti?

The next General Meeting will be held Thursday, October 27. This is our annual Fall Dinner & Awards night. Please join us for a complimentary dinner at 6 p.m. before the regular meeting.
HHS also entered the Group Display category at the Caledonia Fair. The display celebrated the 150th year of the fair.
