DUNNVILLE—Home ownership is a dream for many in Haldimand County; for one young mother and her son, their dream has come true thanks to Habitat for Humanity.
Brittany and her son have a brand-new home to call their own, which was turned over to them on Friday, November 22, 2019 with many family, friends, volunteers, supporters, and dignitaries present.
“We seek to build strength, stability, and self-reliance through shelter. And that’s exactly what we are about to do,” said Shawn Ferris, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity Hamilton, before the house was turned over. “What we do is select potential homeowners based on specific criteria…. It’s somebody who doesn’t necessarily qualify for a traditional mortgage but is able to make a mortgage payment.”
“Houses are sold to the chosen recipient, however, there is no down payment, no interest, and the payments are geared to income,” said Ferris. While Habitat for Humanity helps control the costs, there are requirements to be chosen and those chosen are expected to give back with their time. “They have to have decent credit, at least one child, and a willingness to partner. Brittany completed 500 volunteer hours to earn her right to this house. Being a parent, holding down a job and all the other responsibilities, it’s really challenging to complete 500 hours and she did that with the support of many of the folks here. So, congratulations to her.”
