I was invited to the United Church Women (UCW) from Cayuga United Church for their April meeting. It was evident by the buzz of conversation and beautifully laid table this was going to be a great afternoon.
UCW President, Karon Thomson, said the congregation is on a quest to bring people back to church, such as through hospitality. Volunteers prepare breakfast and lunch around Sunday morning service. Karon and fellow volunteer, Marg Wilson, decorate for special occasions and bring lots of fun. I’ve heard some of the recipes from this column have even been shared at these. Karon asked the ladies to share their stories about the recipes they brought.
Sharron Gsellmann described growing up in Nova Scotia; around age 12 an elderly neighbour asked if she would bake for her. Sharron made date and nut loaf, and was paid $3.50. The lady recommended her baking to others, which led to a part-time job for Sharron. Lois Glenny reminisced about making cornbread with her grandson and how hard it was to find a recipe at the time. Lynne Elgersma told us her children learned to cook by themselves as she always preferred time in the garden! According to Lynne, they have turned out to be good cooks. One other great tidbit the ladies shared with me was that church cookbooks have the best recipes.
Marg Wilson prepared the Orange Pineapple Carnation Delight and Sue Wright the Springtime Lemon Dessert. Enjoy! And look for more recipes from these ladies in the future!
