HAGERSVILLE—Last Thursday, a little past noon, large columns of black smoke could be seen billowing into the sky from as far away as Caledonia, originating from a structure fire that engulfed a detached garage at 19 Alma Street South in Hagersville.

The blaze sent flames roughly 20 feet into the afternoon sky and it appeared as though it could spread to other nearby structures as neighbours gathered around outside, helpless to do much but wait for Haldimand County’s fire department to arrive.

HAGERSVILLE—Firefighters quickly quelled the spreading fire, creating a thick cloud of smoke that could be seen from as far away as Caledonia.

When the first Haldimand County fire truck arrived on the scene, the crew quickly attached their hose to a hydrant on the corner of Alma Street South and Church Street and set to work on bringing the fire under control. Within minutes, the flames were extinguished, replaced with thick clouds of grey smoke pouring out of the smoldering remains of the garage, inside of which the wreck of a car could be seen.

Some damage occurred to the vinyl siding of nearby structures due to the heat. The total of the damages is estimated at $55,000.

There were no reports of injuries from the incident, and the fire was successfully contained to the single structure thanks to the quick efforts of Haldimand County’s firefighting team.
