CALEDONIA — The Caledonia Corvairs continued their strong run with three consecutive victories, solidifying their position as a formidable force in the regular season of the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League.
Over their last three games, the Corvairs demonstrated a combination of defensive resilience and offensive firepower to extend their winning streak to six games.
In their first matchup on February 27, the Corvairs dominated the Brantford Titans with a 3-0 shutout on the road.
The scoring opened early in the first period when Travis Houle found the net at 4:35, assisted by Ethan Quick. Later in the period, Evan Bradacs extended the lead with a powerplay goal at 9:38, assisted by Sami Douglas-Najem.
In the second frame, Brody Leet added another marker at 17:17, with help from Drew Agnew.
Keegan Jackson was perfect between the pipes, turning aside all 29 shots he faced to secure a well-earned shutout.
The Corvairs controlled the pace throughout the contest, outshooting Brantford 32-29 and shutting down all nine of their opponent’s power-play opportunities. Caledonia’s disciplined defensive structure, anchored by Jackson’s stellar play, was the key factor in the victory.
On March 1, the Corvairs edged the Fort Erie Meteors 5-4 in a back-and-forth contest.
Fort Erie struck first with a power-play goal at 4:49 of the opening period, but Caledonia responded at 11:33 when Ty McHutchion netted his 15th goal of the season, assisted by Osborne and Quick.
The Meteors took control early in the second period, scoring three consecutive goals between the 6:17 and 9:52 marks.
However, the Corvairs quickly answered back. McHutchion struck again at 10:17, assisted once more by Quick and Osborne, narrowing the deficit to one goal. Just over two minutes later, Houle capitalized on the power play with help from Cacciola and McHutchion to tie the game at 12:52. Caledonia took the lead before the second intermission when Bradacs found the back of the net at 19:12, assisted by Cacciola and Naherne.
In the third period, Houle secured the win with another power-play goal at 14:02, assisted by Cacciola and Leet.
Jackson stood tall in goal, stopping 34 of 38 shots in total, even as the Corvairs weathered a late push from the Meteors.
The following night, Caledonia faced the Brantford Titans for the second time in four days, this time on home ice at the Haldimand County Caledonia Centre.
The game proved to be a dramatic battle, with the Corvairs ultimately emerging victorious in a thrilling 4-3 overtime win.
Brantford took an early lead with a powerplay goal at 4:12, but Quick responded at 6:11 to tie, assisted by Osborne. The Titans regained the lead late in the period at 17:24.
The second frame remained scoreless, with both teams trading chances but failing to convert.
Brantford extended their advantage to 3-1 early in the third period at 4:16. Caledonia pushed back in the final minutes, and their persistence paid off when Naherne pulled the Corvairs level at 15:24, assisted by Houle and Swift.
Just over a minute later, McHutchion netted the tying goal at 16:34, with assists from Osborne and Quick.
Neither team could find the net again in regulation, but Douglas-Najem ended the contest with an unassisted goal at 6:40 of the extra frame, securing another crucial victory.
Jackson was solid once again, stopping 32 of 35 shots to keep the Corvairs in the game.
Caledonia’s recent surge has put them just one point behind fourth-place Port Colborne and within striking distance of the top three in the eastern conference. The Corvairs have two tough games to finish out the regular season, facing the Ayr Centennials March 6 and the conference-leading St. Catharines Falcons March 8.
