CALEDONIA—As mask-wearing becomes a norm in all walks of life, there’s a dedicated and growing crew of volunteers stepping up to sew from home.
It isn’t just about the masks; essential workers wearing masks for long hours find that the elastic ear loops can seriously irritate skin and so ear savers were invented. They’re simplicity in itself: a small strip of material with a button on each end worn at the back of the head, with the elastic ear loops stretched back over the buttons. Voila, irritation over!

Lorie Tokola
Lorie Tokola is a retired RN originally from Caledonia now living in Sherkston, and when she heard of ear savers she set her mother to making some for a niece. Tokola doesn’t crochet, knit, or sew, but she does organize. Seeing a need beyond the family, she brought together a local crochet team, which quickly expanded to knitting and sewing. A Facebook group – Mask Mate Ear-savers for Front Line & Essential Workers – was set up and interest, both from makers and from those desperate for mask comfort, came pouring in. All of this since April 22, 2020!
Today, the team includes 445 crocheters, knitters, sewers, delivery people, local co-ordinators, and administrators.
