JARVIS—The recent emergence of COVID-19 has caused a major disruption to everyday activities and events. When Hilda Hoogenboom, a resident of Leisure Living in Jarvis, decided to cancel her own 99th birthday party, even before the facility was placed in mandatory lockdown, her family still wanted to celebrate her special day while respecting social distancing. On March 21, 2020 they joined their voices in the Leisure Living parking lot to surprise Hilda with a very special singing of Happy Birthday.
This global pandemic is among many hardships and challenges Hilda has witnessed in 99 years. Her youngest daughter, Betty Dunnett of Jarvis, spoke with The Press to share her mom’s story.

JARVIS—While the media was unable to meet with Hilda Hoogenboom directly since Leisure Living is on lockdown, her daughter, Betty Dunnett, brought a picture to share.
