Child found deceased in area fire

CREDIT—A 10-year-old child has been pronounced deceased after firefighters responded to a fully engulfed camping trailer fire on Monday, March 13, 2023 at approximately 1:53 a.m. 

Haldimand OPP, Haldimand County Fire Department, Six Nations Fire Department, and Paramedic Services responded to the fire at a Mississauga Road, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation address. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire. 

The child was located inside and subsequently pronounced deceased on scene. Six people, including two adults and four children, were able to escape and suffered minor injuries.

“The Missisaugas of the Credit First Nation are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic passing of a young community member,” said Chief R Stacey LaForme. “Please join us in expressing our sincere condolences and prayers to the family and everyone affected by this tragedy. We are asking that you please respect the family and community’s privacy during this time.”

“On behalf of Haldimand County Council I extend my condolences to the child’s family, friends, and all those grieving in the community,” said Haldimand Mayor Shelley Ann Bentley, extending her thoughts to “all that are affected by this tragedy.”

The Haldimand County OPP Crime Unit, the Office of the Fire Marshal, Office of the Chief Coroner, and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service is continuing to investigate this incident.

Victim Services of Haldimand-Norfolk-New Credit were engaged and are assisting family members and the victims involved in this incident.
