HALDIMAND—The following were discussed at Council in Committee on February 4, 2020 and any decisions were ratified at Council on February 10.

Lawrence requests meeting with Barrett

After a disappointing meeting at the Rural Ontario Municipal Assc. conference regarding water sharing with Haldimand, Norfolk, and Six Nations where the Ministry of Infrastructure was unaware about the water supply issue and news from the Ministry of Transportation that plans to complete the bypass on Hwy. 6 to the Hamilton Airport will not be moving forward, Councillor Dan Lawrence has requested that local MPP Toby Barrett come to an upcoming Council in Committee meeting.

Council voiced its frustrations with what they see is a disconnect between the veteran MPP and local issues.

“It seems like the MPP is in a silo, completely alienating himself from what we are trying to do here for the people of Haldimand and we need to work together in a better way,” said Mayor Ken Hewitt. The comments come after Barrett posted online requesting input on what could make Hwy. 6 safer. That same week, Hewitt received notice that there was not enough traffic or accidents to warrant the extended bypass. Hewitt said he found it odd that the request for info was posted at the same time that the same government was denying requests for changes to the road in question.
