DUNNVILLE—“Wouldn’t it be sweet to beat cancer?”
That was the question in mind for students of Dunnville Secondary School as they hosted their candy-themed eighth annual Relay for Life on Friday, April 24, 2026.
A total of 74 students participated from 6 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. in the overnight event, filled with laps, activities, and remembrance.
Relay for Life is a global event and key fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society, where participants take turns walking around a set route to symbolize the ongoing fight against cancer.
It focuses on advocacy by gathering the community to take part in something bigger than themselves.
Over the years, Dunnville Secondary School has raised $100,000 for the cause.
This year’s event began with an opening ceremony, which included touching speeches from student Sophie Martin, educational assistant Rachelle Auger, and cancer survivors.
Their stories highlighted how cancer touches all of our lives.
In the opening speech, they said, “Cancer is something that has affected us all in some form, whether it is through a diagnosis or the loss of a relative or friend. When we come together, we hold the power to change the future of cancer.”
Martin led the first lap of the relay around the school, followed by her fellow students.
The 74 participating students were part of one of 12 registered teams, each with decorated tents.
At least one person from each team was required to be walking the designated path at all times. The night was filled with exciting activities for those not walking at any given time.
The students played human hungry hungry hippos, minute-to-win-it games, dodgeball, volleyball, ball hockey, and also sang karaoke, painted, and ended the night with yoga.
A pizza party and plenty of snacks helped keep energy levels high all night.
One of the most meaningful moments came during the luminary ceremony, as students decorated lanterns in honour of those battling cancer and those lost to the disease.
These glowing displays of love lined the halls, serving as a powerful reminder to those walking why they participate.
By morning, the school’s commitment to the cause was celebrated with awards and counting donations.
The event was a success, raising $10,104 for the cause and surpassing the school’s goal.
Shannon Vickers, the teacher supervisor of this event, shared, “The students of Dunnville Secondary and the Dunnville community at large are a very giving group of people with a huge heart and we owe our success to all of these wonderful people and community. Our Relay for Life events could not be the success that they are without them. Thank you so much for showing up for us every year!”
If you are inspired by these inspiring students, you too can do your part.
This week only, in person donations by cash or cheque (made out to the Canadian Cancer Society) can be made at the school.
Stop by to have a hand in furthering cancer research and making a brighter future for those affected.
