HAGERSVILLE—As you travel south of Hagersville it is hard to miss the large grain elevators on Concession 11 just east of Highway 6. The looming structures came on the horizon in 2010 as part of LF Mattice Elevators Inc., which has operated in Hagersville since 2005. The company includes Railview Investments, a grain transload facility that ships and receives various products throughout North America. In 2018, LF Mattice Elevators Inc. received an Agribusiness Excellence Award from Haldimand County.
The family-run operation achieved this award by focusing on local farmers and offering efficient service. Freddie Mattice explains that, after receiving many enquiries, they installed a dryer in 2016 that enabled them to take grain from local farms. At present they accept corn, soybeans, wheat, rye, oats, and barley from a customer base that is growing every year.
According to Mattice, one of the main advantages they offer is the speed, unloading grain at a rate of 16,000 bushels/hour. He says, “It used to take an hour to dump 1,000 bushels.” They have a marketing agreement with London Agriculture Commodities (LAC), which has been in Canada since July 1985. LAC has agreements with 15 other elevators across Ontario and tells Mattice where the product is to be shipped in Canada or the United States.
