Engineering professionals challenge students with activity

To The Haldimand Press

HALDIMAND—National Engineering Month is Canada’s largest celebration of engineering excellence, where volunteers from the provincial and territorial regulators host over 500 events that show Canadians how rewarding an engineering career can truly be.

During the month of March, the engineering profession strives to reach out to young Canadians. It is an opportunity for youth to learn about the many disciplines of engineering, and allow them to see where their skill set and interests can fit in. Since there are so many different types of engineering, it’s important for students to understand the various things they can do as engineers so they can pick the discipline that truly motivates and excites them the most. Additionally, the month can teach youth what exactly they need to excel in the profession.

The Brantford Chapter of Professional Engineers Ontario encompasses the City of Brantford, Brant County, Norfolk County, much of Haldimand County, south east Oxford County, Six Nations of the Grand River Territory, and Mississaugas of the Credit Territory.

Our Green Golf Lift activity challenges students to create a device that will lift a golf ball a minimum of 800mm using a piece of string, duct tape and material that can be recycled as part of the community blue box program. It is open to students in grades 4 to 12.  We have two grade categories for the contest, (Grade 4 to 8, and Grade 9 to 12) with separate judging and prizes for each category.

This year the activity runs virtually to ensure that students can meet all local public health requirements. The organizers will provide full instructions to the teams entering the activity. Students must complete the activity by April 5. Registration is open until March 19 at
