SELKIRK—The Women’s Committee for the Haldimand Federation of Agriculture was supposed to hold its 65th annual Daffodil Luncheon in April of 2020 … but because of COVID it was cancelled. So, because we haven’t had a Daffodil Luncheon, we have been talking about doing something different on a smaller scale for the last couple of years.
We came up with a “Spring Tea” to try and promote agriculture and get some of the farmer’s wives involved. Our mission statement is, “The Women’s Committee of the Haldimand Federation of Agriculture is dedicated to the promotion of agriculture in our community while enriching the lives of those in the industry and community partners.”
Rather than the 250 people that we used to have at our Daffodil Luncheons, we had 84 tickets and sold 83. We sat at round tables and everyone had lots of room to move around.
Faith Centennial Church ladies made very good fresh sandwiches for us, and all the committee members made goodies and of course we had tea for lunch.
Charlotte Huitema, who is the secretary for the Haldimand Federation of Agriculture, gave a brief talk about what the Federation is doing.

SELKIRK— The Women’s Committee of the Federation of Agriculture (missing Joyce Smith) and the Spring Tea guest speaker, Brenda Snyder (front, second from left).
Brenda Snyder from Snyder’s Corn was our guest speaker and she gave us a very interesting slide presentation about her family and farm, how Snyder’s Corn came to be, and all the workings of their farm.
Anne McMillan and Pat Hussack each played the piano and sang for us and even got all of us involved in singing rounds – and we even did little exercises while singing.
We have had a lot of positive feedback from everyone that attended. The Women’s Committee will get together and discuss how the day went when considering potential future events.
