Gas prices hit all-time highs

HAGERSVILLE—The gas station in Hagersville was nearing $1.83 a litre on Tuesday, March 8, 2022. This wasn’t even the highest gas price in Haldimand, however, with stations in Caledonia and Dunnville nearing $1.85. Prices are expected to continue climbing, with some analysists predicting it will surge past the $2 mark in the coming weeks. Reasons for the increased price include the ending pandemic causing an increase in demand within a limited supply, the low Canadian dollar, rising oil prices, and the boycott of Russian oil by many countries and companies causing increased bidding on remaining supplies. Federally the carbon tax increase in April is expected to add over 2 cents per litre. Provincially the NDP have introduced legislation to regulate the prices at the pump by setting a weekly price or daily maximum, although Minister of Energy Todd Smith asserted that studies have “shown that regulating gas prices actually doesn’t result in lower gas prices.”                        —Haldimand Press photo by Mike Renzella.
