HALDIMAND—Grand Erie District School Board (GEDSB) has linked its 2019 student census to suspension and achievement data. Overall, the data indicates that specific races, LGBTQ+ students, and students from a lower socio-economic situation were more likely to have higher rates of suspensions and lower achievement levels.
“A critical step to ensuring equity and addressing systemic barriers is to gain a clearer understanding of who our students are and of their school experience,” stated the GEDSB report. While school administrators received demographic reports for their schools in 2019 from the census, additional reports had been delayed due to the labour action in 2019 and the closure of schools due to COVID-19.
