CALEDONIA—Members of the Haldimand Horticultural Society (HHS) were excited to welcome visitors back to Seedy Saturday at the Riverside Exhibition Centre on March 26, 2022. This is the first time the event has been held in person since 2019 and approximately 200 people attended.
Those looking for advice or ideas had the opportunity to take part in workshops to create a spring bouquet or a chicken wire bouquet. Insect motels were on display with kits available for purchase. Guest speakers shared their knowledge and expertise on topics including feeding birds; the benefits of native plants; incorporating red for the 2022 Year of the Garden; and growing succulents.
A food drive in support of the Caledonia and District Food Bank took place throughout the day. Dorette Allemang, Manager of the food bank, appreciates the contributions as the shelves are typically getting low this time of the year. With more new clients at the food bank due to rising costs, Allemang says, “We’re glad the Horticultural Society is doing this for us. Every bit helps.”
HHS Vice President Barb Wilson reflects on the success of Seedy Saturday saying, “It was a busy day but a fun one for all. Speakers were well attended, as well as the workshops. We were most pleased at getting 43 new memberships and one youth membership from the event. We now have 141 HHS members!”
Wilson also extends appreciation to all the sponsors and donors who contributed to Seedy Saturday and all the vendors for their generous donations.
Seedy Saturday offered a showcase of all things garden with vendors appealing to gardening enthusiasts of all ages and levels of experience. From flowers and bulbs to garlic and preserves, to bird seed and the ever popular seed exchange, spring was definitely in the air. Whatever the reason for attending Seedy Saturday, visitors were sure to find inspiration and leave in anticipation of the upcoming growing season.
