Meghan Patrick performed at Hagersville Rocks in 2017 to large crowds that became immediate fans. She returns this year and very much looks forward to being a headliner at the event. We were able to ask a few questions of this award-winning artist who has a popular new single out called Walls come down.
What does the Female Artist of the Year award mean to you?
It is a huge honour to represent women in Canadian country music. To have the respect of my peers, as well as fans, is something I am so grateful for. It inspires me to work even harder so that I can continue to earn that title every day!
How has moving to Nashville impacted your career?
I moved to Nashville about 2.5 years ago, and it is definitely the best decision I ever made. I get to live in a city where I am constantly exposed to a saturation of the greatest songwriters and artists not just in country music, but all genres. It keeps me focused, inspired, and humbled every day. I have also been lucky to make friends with people who are living the same lifestyle as me and chasing the same dreams, which is awesome.
What inspired your current single Walls Come Down?
At the time, my parents were going through a divorce, and it was something I never expected to experience, let alone as an adult. Most of my friends whose parents are divorced did it when they were much younger. My co-writers and I started talking about the different effects a divorce can have on a family, especially everything leading up to it. How that pain and struggle ripples through to everyone around it. We talked about the difficult position our parents are faced with when it comes to trying to protect their kids from what is going on … and how that becomes a lot harder when your kids are adults. Sometimes when several people in a family are struggling with their own demons, they cope by trying to convince everyone else they are fine, but eventually the truth comes to light. I never expected to write that song that day, but we quickly realized that it was something very relatable, and that I needed to take that risk of touching on some of the not so pretty parts of life in my songs if I wanted to really be honest with my fans.
