DUNNVILLE—After a three-year hiatus, track and field is back on the programme for Haldimand elementary schools, and student-athletes from Grades 3-8 jumped at the chance for bragging rights at the Supermeet, held at Thompson Creek Elementary School on June 9, 2022.

One of the most impressive displays of the day came from Walpole North, as the brother and sister duo of Blake and Abby Martin earned awards in 10 events throughout the day.

Abby started the procession with a Meet Record of 2:36.88 in the Senior girls 800m, to go with the Bantam girls record she set three years ago. She followed that with wins in the 400m and long jump, a second in the triple jump, a third in the 100m, and a fourth in the co-ed relay.

Not to be outdone, Blake matched his sister in long jump, winning the Bantam boys event, earned second in the ball throw, third in the relay, and fifth in high jump.

Martin’s Meet Record was the first of six set on the day.

Immediately following her 800m, Ethan Kindree of J.L. Mitchener led from the gun and romped home in 2:23 in the Senior boys tilt. In Novice boys 100m, Isaac Neilson of River Heights put his name in the books; teammate Anderson Fleming set a new mark in the Intermediate boys shot put; Kalen McCormack of Thompson Creek was a stride away from bettering 60 seconds in the Senior boys 400m; and Darya Fedetova of Jarvis left the field in her wake in the Senior girls 100m.

The meet also produced an uncommon result, as Noa McConachie and Chrystal County finished first and second in Senior girls shot put, representing the same school.

The top two athletes in each event qualify for the CAGE (Combined Athletics Grand Erie) Championships, where they will meet the top athletes from Norfolk County. Although Brant County is part of CAGE, they did not offer track and field this year and will not be sending athletes.

The meet will be held at Hagersville Secondary School on June 21.
