HAGERSVILLE—Employees picketed out front of the Hagersville LCBO store on Monday, July 8, 2024 as part of the first-ever strike by LCBO workers in the company’s 97-year history.
The strike is the result of Premier Doug Ford’s accelerated plan to expand privatized alcohol sales in the province, which will see sales coming to convenience stores.
A recent impact of that decision was the closure of the Subway restaurant within Hagersville’s Circle K convenience store to make way for alcohol sales in the store, which is located directly beside a Beer Store and across the street from the LCBO.
OPSEU President JP Hornick stated that Ford has essentially “forced a dry summer for Ontarians by refusing to offer a deal that would be good for LCBO workers and Ontario,” while the LCBO has expressed disappointment with the strike and Ford has publicly promoted other locations in Ontario to buy alcohol while the strike continues.
