To the Editors,

My name is Roger Lambert, retired Wastewater Treatment systems operator. Living in Hagersville for the past seven years, I now find the recycling pickup by the private operator has been altered.

The drivers have been refusing my plastic blue box contents due to a small piece of plastic. The entire blue box was refused even though the entire box contained acceptable recycled plastics. Upon investigation to the operator, I was informed, the small pieces of plastic must be inserted into a larger plastic bag.

The private operator is asking we, the people of Haldimand County, to purchase larger plastic bags for the insertion of the smaller pieces of plastic. There is no doubt, the small pieces of plastic are being directed to landfill, which is a mockery of the recycling program. The private operator is now filling the landfill with more plastic waste, which is not acceptable.

I assume there is a moving belt where workers remove the small pieces of plastic and place them in the designated landfill spot. The operator would like this task to be much easier for the line workers where they can easily pick up the larger bag and direct it to landfill. What this means is, the operator then has an option to eliminate a worker as the selecting process would be easier and quicker.

If this is not the case, I would like for Council to look into this matter and find the cause of the blue box refusals over a small piece of plastic.

Roger Lambert,

Hagersville
