CANFIELD—32-year-old Canfield resident Ria E. VanNoort was the victim of a tragic jet ski-related incident that claimed her life over the weekend off the shores of Lake Ontario at a party held on a private residence in the town of Wilson, New York.
According to authorities on the scene, VanNoort went out on the lake on the jet ski and was later seen floating in the water by other partygoers, who retrieved her from the water.
A 911 call was placed at 6:11 p.m. Saturday evening. Members of the nearby Wilson and South Wilson volunteer fire companies responded to the scene, where they unsuccessfully attempted to resuscitate Vannoort before transporting her to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced deceased a short time later.
VanNoort was employed as a paramedic with both Haldimand County Emergency Services and Hamilton Paramedic Service.
Haldimand County General Manager of Community and Development Services Mike Evers shared his condolences, “The County is saddened by the loss of one of its own, Ria VanNoort, a paramedic who joined the service earlier this year.”
He continued, “The loss of Ria has been felt by the entire service; she made a big impact in a very short time. Ria was dedicated to her profession with a great desire to serve those who needed help, when they needed it most. She will be greatly missed by both the Paramedic Service and the community she served. We also extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends that Ria leaves behind.”
