CAYUGA—On Friday, October 22, 2021 Cayuga’s downtown saw a big change as the old Haldimand Press headquarters, located on Talbot Street, was demolished.

The Haldimand Press began life as the Haldimand Advocate in 1868, founded by E.C. Campbell. The Advocate was originally housed in the basement of a co-op building in Cayuga before moving into the McLaughlin building, and eventually the Talbot Street location that was recently demolished. The Press would later move to Hagersville, settling in 2017 at its current Parkview address.

“The (Talbot Street) building was formerly occupied by S.S. Strome as a store, and J. Earl and E.B. Shant as a Harness Shop,” said Karen Richardson, Heritage Centre Curator.

Owners of the building, Jill and Fred Morison, chose to donate all remaining contents of the building, including a vintage press machine, to the Fisherville Lions Club: “The reason for this choice was because the Fishersville Lions are a strong and vibrant community group,” noted Fred, adding that the Lions are free to sell any items they see fit to benefit the organization.

Jill added that the Lions Club is planning on putting many of the items donated into a public exhibit or display: “Fred and I completely support sharing the history of The Haldimand Press with the community.”

Keep an eye on future editions for a follow up story on the Lions’ plan.
