Driver faces multiple charges following traffic stop in Cayuga

CAYUGA—Haldimand OPP has charged a G1 class driver with multiple criminal and Highway Traffic Act offences following a traffic stop on Munsee Street North in Cayuga.

On Sunday, May 24, 2020 at 2:20 a.m., OPP were on patrol in Cayuga when a vehicle caught the attention of an officer.  When police stopped the vehicle on Munsee Street North, the passenger quickly fled the vehicle on foot. As the driver attempted to flee the area on foot, they were quickly apprehended by the officer. While speaking with the driver, signs of impairment by alcohol were detected and the driver was placed under arrest. A search of the driver was conducted which resulted in police locating a quantity of illicit drugs. Further investigation revealed the vehicle was stolen. As a result, a 19-year-old of Cayuga was charged with:

  • Driving a motor vehicle while impaired
  • Driving a motor vehicle with over 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood
  • Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000
  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance – Cocaine
  • Class G1 driver unaccompanied by a qualified driver, under the Highway Traffic Act (HTA)
  • Class G1 licence holder – carry front passenger, HTA
  • Class G1 licence holder – drive at unlawful hour, HTA
  • Drive motor vehicle with improper headlights, HTA
  • Drive motor vehicle without proper rear lights, HTA
  • Drive motor vehicle – no permit, HTA
  • Novice driver – Blood Alcohol Concentration above zero, HTA

The accused is to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Cayuga at a later date to answer to the charges.
