To the Editor,
On April 27, 2023 I attended the MZO meeting along with hundreds of other residents. There were very informative speakers against MZO.
I cannot believe some of the actions of Council. Mr. O’Neill asked each speaker if they belonged to an alliance. This was not amusing or informative. It is still a free country.
Mr. Shirton seemed to be adamant on judging the mayor. His use of the word “propaganda” was used a lot. This is a very strong word to use. We can have our own opinions and ideas. He was in my opinion very rude to some speakers. The idea that everyone in room except one even knew what MZO is very insulting; I think we are informed and resent being called “stupid”. Why else are we questioning the MZO?
For whatever reason most of Council wants this passed fast. Listen to your people. This is a Haldimand decision. We can’t keep infrastructure up now; fix what we have.
The pictures Empire sent of Nanticoke, the trails, pool, recreation, Lake Erie, NO Stelco stacks, industrial lands – this is industrial land leave it that way.
Just look at McClung Road.
Mr. Shirton quoted Mark Twain, a famous “CANADIAN” something about “change”.
Well change is in Council now. There is a new mayor, work together, be OPEN MINDED, not in the past. There is not a big rush to pass MZO. Haldimand talk to your councillor.
To Council: “put on your big boy pants” and work TOGETHER; make Haldimand a great place to live. Heritage is part our lives.
Thank you,

To the Editor,
Here we go again. In 1979 there was a proposal to build a new community with parks and trails and stores in Townsend. That did not work out so well. We cannot even buy a bag of milk without driving, which is really bad for the environment. Now the proposal to do it again is on the table only this time we will have it in an industrial park! There are existing communities that can support expansion without using industrial land.
We resent Mr. Rob Shirton when he insinuates that members of the community are ignorant and uneducated about the facts and can be easily swayed by pamphlets and special interest groups. We have not been influenced as we have not seen any of these flyers. Mr. Shirton also claims 150 people is a small amount and that it proves that people are uninterested. Surly he is not saying all 45,000 Haldimand residents should have been present!
Also at the meeting Mr. James Kaspersetz stated that the steel industry has run its course. He needs to realize that Lake Erie is one of the most modern plants in North America, and the steel industry is a very valuable asset to the community in terms of taxes and employment. Doug Ford is trying to promote the trades and here we are trying to chase industry out of our area.
We should be sticking to the 3km buffer zone and we should be looking to use existing communities that already have the infrastructure. Building in an industrial park is a bad idea!!
