Shirley Smith still vibrant at 100 years of age

CALEDONIA—It wasn’t the big party originally planned, but Shirley Smith’s 100th birthday last month was a memorable celebration. Shirley was seated outside her apartment wearing the beautiful dress she had purchased especially for the occasion. Family and friends formed a parade of 70 vehicles offering birthday wishes as they drove past. Shirley laughs as she recalls, “They just kept coming!”

At 100 years of age, Shirley Smith has shown an appreciation for everything life has offered her. She grew up on a farm on Sawmill Road just outside of Caledonia and remembers walking more than two miles to school. She and her cousins would look for shortcuts, often going through the fields, especially during “horrible, cold winters.”
